Custom Engagement Ring Care Instructions – Protect Your Investment
Make your ring last forever
When we first get the custom engagement ring of our dreams, most of us are so excited to have such an exquisite piece of jewelry, and the promise of marriage that comes along with it, we don’t learn the single most important thing that comes with owning such an amazing ring: how to care for it properly. Most of these care tips are, in fact, common sense and should be obvious to many people, but when you wear a ring day in and day out, year after year, it can often slip your mind.
Ring care basics
The first thing you should do once you get the engagement ring of your dreams is to pick a spot, one spot, that will forever be designated as, “the spot where I put my ring every single time I take it off.” It may sound silly but it can save you needless hours of worry if you can’t find your ring. You can make an agreement with your partner that if the ring is ever seen sitting around any other part of the home, it should be moved and put in this one designated spot, that way, if you ever lose track of it, it should be in its designated spot.
Your ring should be taken off any time serious work is being done that could lead to the ring getting dirty or you perspiring. If you’re going to be doing something like dishes or gardening that requires you to wear gloves, it is always a good idea to take your ring off so that the stones and setting don’t get caught on the inside of your gloves. Make sure you set your ring in your designated spot so there is never any confusion as to where you put your ring.
If you have decided that your designated spot is inside of your jewelry box, you need to wrap your rings, or anything that contains diamonds, in silk or other wrappings to keep them separate from your other jewelry. Diamonds are extremely sharp and if your engagement ring were to come into contact with a beautiful string of pearls, they could theoretically scratch them. Also, by wrapping your ring when you aren’t using it, it is like adding an extra protective layer to keep your ring safe.
It is always a good idea every few days to make sure none of your stones are loose inside the setting. Very gently tap the back of the band to see if any of the stones move. If they do, take them to your local jeweler right away to be repaired.
The issue of cleaning your engagement ring is a topic of much debate. Most people do not risk using the wrong soap or materials and simply drop their ring off at the local jeweler and have a professional do it. If you would like to clean your ring yourself, you can submerge it in warm, soapy water for approximately 30 minutes. Make sure you use a non-detergent soap to get the job done. If your ring is suffering from greasy build up, you can dip the ring in pure rubbing alcohol or even vodka before hand to loosen up grease build up.
