Is it Time to Buy An Engagement Ring? The Diamond Ring Dilemma

I am starting to wonder if it is time to finally buy my girlfriend an engagement ring. The reason this has suddenly even become an issue is because a big commercial for DeBeer’s diamonds came on television the other day. There we were, sitting on the couch, calmly happy with our status of just “being a couple” when suddenly her eyes brightened in the glow of a gigantic bauble from South Africa shining on the small screen. The passionate music was playing and there it was – the circlet of eternity being slid on the fourth finger of this overjoyed looking woman.

I started smirking and then looked over at my girlfriend’s eyes and realized that they were actually misting over a bit at the prospect of having a diamond engagement ring of her own. It did flit across my mind that nowadays women are marrying themselves by buying their own diamond engagement rings but unfortunately that only applies to single women. As we are a couple I now realize that it is going to be my responsibility to buy her the biggest, shiniest ring that two to three months of my salary can afford.

Does The Male Get a Ring Too?

I am not sure if in the end if it is a diamond ring that she really wants but from the gleam in her eyes as she was watching that commercial it would certainly seem that she does. In fact I am not so sure that she would just want to marry me to get the ring as admittedly they are very attractive. In fact I wouldn’t mind the men’s version that I keep seeing on that DeBeer’s commercial. It would certainly dress up any outfit I own including the ratty old Rolling Stone’s T-Shirt that I have and the cut-off jeans shorts that I use to mow the line. Maybe I should ask her if she would like to buy ME a men’s diamond engagement ring and we could do a kind of trade.

Anyhow I am starting to get the feeling that she is secretly wishing for me to ask her to marry its not and me like I have a problem with that. It is just that I need to figure out how I am going to 1) afford it and 2) finally pop the question.

Yet another question that is on my mind is “Should I actually borrow money to afford this ring of engagement?” and “If I have to borrow money to buy an engagement ring should I be getting married in the first place?”

A Diamond Is Forever!

I find myself wondering if I should buy her some other kind of ring with a less expensive stone in it and then of course I remembered the major line in that obnoxious commercial “A Diamond is Forever.” Notice that they are not saying, “A Topaz is Forever” or “A Zircon Is Forever.” It seems that I will be having to splurge on the real thing if I am going to get out of this life on earth unscathed by the shame of buying my soul mate anything less than the perfect diamond.
