Custom Engagement Rings Featuring Birthstones – Yes or No?

Make sure you check to see if your beloved likes her birthstone first
!

When designing a custom engagement ring for you better half, you are presented with literally a million different options on how you want your ring designed and what stones you want featured in your ring.

Decisions, Decisions

Most people start with a band of gold, silver or platinum and a setting that features at least one diamond. But after that, an engagement ring can really be made up of anything you like. One of the most popular choices for complementary stones is birthstones. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular birthstones and see which ones fit and which ones don’t.

Birthstones 101

Almost every woman knows what her birthstone is. Some women love their birthstone and have several pieces of jewelry already that reflect what their stone is. Some other women, however, either don’t know what their birthstone is or they dislike it and proudly wear other month’s stones. While it is tough to pinpoint what is exactly the single most popular birthstone, the two stones that are used most frequently in engagement rings are rubies and emeralds.

Red and Green for Me and You

The month of May features Emeralds as their birthstones and July has rubies. Since these are both highly sought after precious stones, they are extremely popular in engagement rings, as well as any other kind of jewelry. But what about months that feature semi-precious stones or stones that really aren’t worth that much? It all depends on what your beloved cherishes and what they desire in their ring. There are engagement rings sold all the time that don’t even feature diamonds because they may not be a favorite of the person getting the ring. Let’s take a look at some popular semi-precious stones that are favorites in engagement rings.

Semi-Precious Stones for Rings?

The beginning of the calendar year is filled with stones that, while beautiful, aren’t usually considered engagement ring material. January features garnet, February features amethyst and March features aquamarine. A good way to gauge to see if your better half would enjoy an engagement ring featuring one of these less traditional stones is to take a peek at her current jewelry collection and see how prominently her birthstone is featured. If you notice aquamarine in almost every one of her jewelry pieces, it would probably be a good bet to get an engagement ring with a diamond and aquamarine. If you only find one or two aquamarine pieces, you might want to stick with a more traditional setting with just diamonds.

Diamonds Times Two

Of course, if your significant other’s birthday is in April, you’ll have to get diamonds, anyway! That’s because the birthstone for the month of April is diamonds! And just when you thought you had all of the birthstones down, a new birthstone has been introduced for the month of December, raising the number of stones dedicated to the Christmas month to three. December now features turquoise, zircon and tanzanite as its official birthstones.

The Big Decision

If you are unsure of which stone to use in your engagement ring other than diamonds, there are subtle ways of dropping a hint to see which stone would be a winner and which ones you want to avoid. The important thing is to make sure the ring you decide on is something that she’ll cherish for the rest of her life.
